Unlocking advanced jobs in Final Fantasy XI remains one of the most memorable milestones for players exploring the classic MMORPG. Among these quests, I Can Hear A Rainbow stands out as the gateway to unlocking the iconic Summoner job. Traversing Vana'diel to collect environmental weather conditions requires preparation, patience, and a solid grasp of key quest triggers.

Essential Level and Item Requirements

To begin this quest, your main character must reach at least Level 30 on any active job. In addition to the level threshold, you must acquire a rare item known as Carbuncle's Ruby. This elusive item drops at a low rate from leech-type monsters across various zones throughout the world.

Using a Thief job or subjob with Treasure Hunter can significantly improve your chances of obtaining the ruby. Keep in mind that leeched mobs in areas like Dangruf Wadi or Jugner Forest will not yield the drop. Once you secure the item, head to the House of the Hero located in Windurst Walls at coordinates G-3.

Starting the Quest in Windurst Walls

Investigating the door at the House of the Hero while carrying Carbuncle's Ruby triggers a special cutscene. During this sequence, a mysterious voice instructs you to gather the seven colors of light scattered throughout nature. This interaction officially registers the quest and allows you to begin tracking environmental weather phenomena.

It is important to note that you cannot gain credit for any weather conditions prior to activating this initial cutscene. You can carry the ruby inside your inventory, Mog Sack, or Mog Satchel while traveling across regions. However, storing the item inside your Mog Case will prevent weather progression from registering properly.

Collecting the Seven Colors of Light

The core objective involves zoning into outdoor, monster-populated areas during specific weather states. Each successful entry rewards you with a distinct cutscene representing one of the rainbow's colors. You must experience standard clear weather along with Fire, Ice, Earth, Water, Wind, and Lightning weather conditions.

Players can check with Weather Reporter NPCs located in major cities to predict upcoming weather shifts in nearby regions. Riding a chocobo or utilizing quick teleports between active zones makes tracking rare elements like Fire much faster. Towns, indoor dungeons, and specific expansion regions do not count toward quest completion.

Finalizing the Quest and Unlocking Summoner

Once you successfully witness all seven weather cutscenes, head over to La Theine Plateau to complete the final step. Locate the stone circle at coordinates G-6 near the Crag of Holla. Trade your Carbuncle's Ruby to the target point at the center of the circle.

Completing this final step triggers the concluding cutscene and grants the title of Rainbow Weaver. You immediately unlock the Summoner job along with the ability to summon Carbuncle as an avatar. Furthermore, a visible rainbow will temporarily appear over La Theine Plateau to celebrate your success.
